Student and Teacher Series Outcomes:

Students will understand their progress and growth relative to specific math content standards. Students will engage productively with their peers in learning, and will recognize and utilize the brilliance of their peers in learning.

Teachers will use ongoing student performance on standards in order to inform their instruction and group work. Teachers will incorporate equitable collaborative learning environments that support all students in their math classroom.

Session 1: Competence, Collaboration, and Student Progress

Wednesday, February 1, 6:00-7:30 PM

Assignment

  • We have an amazing new web meeting app that we will use starting this quarter, Zoom. Make sure that you download this software ahead of time!
  • Read this post about status problems by Ilana Horn, author of Strength in Numbers – Collaborative Learning in Secondary Mathematics. Answer the reflection questions listed in the Collaborative Workspace.
  • Invite a fellow teacher, an administrator, or your TLD Coach to observe your classroom and specifically help you look for status problems. The directions for doing this are laid out in Dr. Horn’s blog post, but you can also give them this document to assist in the observation.
  • Upload the observer’s document to your CM portfolio and briefly share your initial reactions in the collaborative document.

Session 2: Designing and Facilitating Group-Worthy Tasks

Wednesday, February 15, 6:00-7:30 PM

Assignment

    • Complete by EOD 2/10
    • Reinforce or reestablish you classroom norms with students any day in the next week with the Talking Points activity or other similar, equal-status activity.
    • Break down an upcoming standard into any number of competencies. Then, during class, check yourself on assigning competence to different students throughout the lesson based on these.
    • Briefly share the norms you and your class came up with, and how you feel you are doing with maintaining norms and assigning competence, in the collaborative document.
    • Since we will be talking about group-worthy tasks next session, find a problem or task that you would like to use in the two weeks after our next session and share a link to this in your portfolio.

Session 3: Capitalizing on Student Learning

Wednesday, March 1, 6:00-7:30 PM

Assignment

  • By Friday, 2/24…
    • Complete your planning aligned with the Thinking Through a Lesson Protocol (TTLP).
    • Decide on the student structures (Task cards, positive interdependence norms, multi-ability treatment) that you will use during this activity, and incorporate that into the activity as well.
    • Conduct this activity and share a reflection and/or student samples in the collaborative document.

    By Tuesday, 2/28…

    • Megan will give you some initial feedback and thoughts on your collaborative lesson plan and artifacts.
